October 7th I had a lot of laundry because Wales was very muddy, so I got up at 6 to do laundry only to find out when I walked into the laundry room that someone had beaten me there by a matter of minutes. It has been almost two months here and there is still only one washing machine that’s worth a shit because the other two working ones take two hours to do a load bigger than eight pounds. I sulked back to my room and got ready for my day. We had a group presentation in Comparative Gov. and Politics today and my group's topic was comparing gun control between the two nations (*spoiler alert* it’s a night and day difference), so I did some final touch-ups to the presentation to ensure our chances of getting a better grade. The time we were supposed to aim for was 15-20 minutes in the outline and we went for almost a half hour, so it’s a good ...

One Month Down

September 23-  This morning was an exciting one, because for my Comparative Government and Politics class we were taking a field trip to the Churchill War Rooms. The Churchill War Rooms is an underground complex with cramped spaces where Winston Churchill and his administration conducted war efforts during WW2. I learned much about Churchill's life and how he was a very controversial politician back in his time. For class we had questions to answer about UK Government and about Churchill, and after I had sufficient knowledge I left around 12 to go home for lunch. Math in the afternoon was nothing extraordinary, obviously. After class I did a large grocery run to Lidl where I had to carry about 25 pounds of groceries back a half mile in my arms because I only brought one tote bag and a backpack. Once the groceries were unloaded I played basketball again...

Avoiding Monotony

I'm scared of falling into too much of a rigid routine because I believe it will hamper my ability to take in all the experiences that studying abroad has to offer. Regardless I must still devote a large chunk of my time to my schooling to ensure that I get in-state tuition for next fall. This week I had a lot of fun exploring London, trying and seeing new things and farthing my expertise in becoming an independent student. I hope you enjoy reading. September 16- I got up for class today around 7:30. This was a long day, both classes felt much longer than three hours each, but I survived. Directly after class I went on a pretty large grocery run that would feed me for most of the week. I got yogurt and granola for breakfast, sandwich ingredients for lunch and bags of chips, for dinner I got some burgers and rice. Around 5:45 pm, I went to the Y to p...

Getting Settled + Lakes

Getting Settled + Lakes To view other blog entries, click the back arrow next to "Spencer FYA London", at the top of the screen.     This week was a typical week at the study center, classes haven't really been that challenging yet but I expect the difficulty to ramp-up now that everyone should be a little more accustomed to the college life. The weather is starting to get colder and I need to either be wearing a sweater or pants if I'm going outside. The study center took a trip up to the lakes district from Friday to Sunday which was a lot of fun, and involved multiple hikes, cheap pints, and some rain. As I'm writing this bit we are on the charter bus back to London and I am worn out. I thought the hikes we were going on would be no problem being that three months ago I was summiting some of the mountains in the rockies, but I was humbled quickly. One of the hikes in lakes was over twice the increase in elevation than the highest one I did in Montana. We stay...
